With all of this talk about an impending recession, it’s good to know about a “recession special” to help us through these trying times.

The “Recession Special” at Robert’s Western World, which has been a perennial offering on the menu at the popular lower Broadway honky tonk since the previous recession in 2008, consists of a fried bologna sandwich, a Moon Pie, a bag of Lays potato chips, and a PBR (as in a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer) – all for $6.

That is quite a deal for sure and I have to say the friendly and festive atmosphere at Robert’s will make the “special” extra special.

The special includes: “six slices of bologna, thinly sliced, then fried on our seasoned  flat top Honky Tonk grill,” said Robert’s event planner Julie Richmond. She said the bologna is “stacked on Texas toast, two slices of tomato, and fresh lettuce.”

She added that “the locals know the secret to happiness is to add cheese.”

She said that Robert’s owner JesseLee Jones “decided to do a ‘recession special’ during the last recession, offering a $5 bologna sandwich special. It’s amazing that it has just gone up one dollar,” said Richmond.

And special has been very popular, with the honky tonk selling about 100 or more of the bologna combos on any “regular day” and “sometimes on a busy weekend we will sell 250-plus in a day,” she said.

In 2012, Jones added what he called a “doggone stimulus package” which consists of a corn dog, chips, Moon Pie and Busch Light. Richmond says it sells “pretty well but not as well as the “recession special.’ ”

Nothing on the Robert’s menu is more than $10 and it proudly announces that its burgers are 100 percent Angus beef.

“Next to the fried bologna, our cheeseburger” is a best seller, Richmond said. “Cheese curds are also fan favorites.”

But obviously, the food is not the main draw at Robert’s which is known by locals and visitors for its round-the-clock live country music and authentic honky tonk atmosphere.

If you go, Food Network Magazine, which featured Robert’s in its “Southern Fried Road Trip” article in this month’s issue recommended the “recession special” and advised: “Order like a regular and ask for the bologna well done.”
