At least 100 civilians remain inside Ukraine's Azovstal steel plant in the southeastern city of Mariupol, according to a city official.

The claim made by Mariupol's adviser to the mayor on Tuesday comes after reports over the weekend that all women, children, and elderly civilians trapped in the steel plant's underground bunkers had been rescued. The sprawling steel plant, where the city's last Ukrainian troops remain holed up, continues to be besieged by Russian fire.

"In addition to the military, at least 100 civilians remain in the [Azovstal] shelters. However, this does not reduce the density of attacks by the occupiers," Mariupol mayoral aide Petro Andryushchenko posted on Telegram Tuesday.

Most of the remaining civilians inside the facility are thought to be men, according to a report.

On Saturday, in a deal brokered by the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross, Ukrainian officials claimed to have completed an evacuation of all women, children, and elderly civilians inside the facility successfully.

The Azovstal steel plant is the last area of the city still controlled by Ukrainian forces. The city's last defenders have been surrounded by Russian forces for weeks, facing near-constant bombardment.

Russian forces have attempted to raid the facility despite claims by Russian President Vladimir Putin that a storming of the steel plant would not occur.

Ukrainian forces inside the steel plant have said on numerous occasions that they refuse to surrender to Russian forces.
