One of the best rivalries in the Tri-Valley League, and one of the most exciting field hockey games to watch is any matchup between Newport and Greenwood.

With Newport claiming a couple upsets in the last few years, every time these two teams play each other can go either way.

At the Perry County tournament, and on Greenwood’s home field, the victory went to the Wildcats. But this week on Newport’s field, the Buffaloes fought back and won 2-0.

The Wildcats currently lead the Tri-Valley League with a 4-1 league record and 9-1 overall. The Buffaloes are also 4-1 in the league, and 7-3 overall.

Despite having top scorers in the league like Audrey Weger who is first in the league with six goals, the Wildcats couldn’t get the ball out of their defensive end long enough to give them a chance.

Wildcat Rebekah Brinser also leads the league for assists with six, while Grace Roush is third for goals where she is tied with Delaney Greene from Newport and Brooke Barswisk from Line Mountain.

Claire Weidenhammer is behind Weger with five goals, one of them coming from the game.

After Newport controlled play for the majority of the first quarter, Weidenhammer took a reverse shot and found the back of the cage for the Buffaloes first goal.

“We dominated offensively and played like a well-oiled machine,” Newport coach Cheryl Cappazzoli said.

Greenwood was forced on defense most of the game, which is also not an area they usually lack.

Wildcat goalie Lydia Miller is second in the league with 15 saves while only allowing three goals against her.

Newport was able to get by somehow not once, but twice.

Addy Geer scored the security goal in the second half after blasting the ball from the left-hand side into the far right corner to bring the lead to 2-0.

Eventually making it to their circle, the Wildcats were able to pull a couple corners but there was no getting past Newport goalie Ella Weidenhammer.

The time ran out on the clock and Newport won the intense matchup in shutout fashion 2-0.

“The girls played as a team and depended on each other to step up their game,” Cappazzoli said.
